Horse Brigade WW1-Canada
Canada

In the mud and guck
even the horses get stuck
bogged down in France
with hardly a chance
to help our boys with ammo
and things
as the bullets and shrapnel
zing
past our head
and into the dead
and even the horses die
we are scared as hell
I wouldnt lie
the Hun lies in wait
to kill all that moves
even with hooves
my nerves are shot
I cant stay still
I wonder whats going to happen to me over the hill
my horse is down and i look around
death and stench
makes me rench
and the rats scurry in
as death starts to grin.
in memory of Officer William Roberts Boyd
Canadian Army Horse Brigade
Officer Boyd returned to Ontario after the war and entered medical school
but after a few years had to withdraw
because of various nevous conditions
he married Dorothy Lavrock Truax
they then moved west to Summerland BC
and became orchardists
and raised 5 daughters. Officer Boyd died a tragic early death
perhaps because of his war experiences.
